From WSPY News: A bill backed by Sycamore Republican State Rep. Jeff Keicher was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker on August 15. House Bill 1226, also known as the Road Safety and Fairness Act, raises the age of mandatory road tests for older drivers that are renewing a driver’s license from 79 to 87.
Keicher says this bill was the product of several years of drafting legislation and was first introduced as House Bill 4431 in 2024, but it never made it to the House floor for a vote despite bipartisan support. In the last year, the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office partnered with lawmakers on this bill.
Keicher says at the end of the day, it’s about making sure seniors are given a fair chance at proving their ability to operate a motor vehicle.
